Since we got our buck BigWig, we have been looking for a friend/penmate for him so he wouldn't be lonely when the girls go into their barn. Some people we know had a little guy for sale. They are very nice people but they are kind of clueless with their goats. He is half boer and the other half is a mix of Nubian and Alpine. Luckily he does not seem to have a Nubian voice. He is 6 1/2 months old and only 45 lbs. They have had a real problem with worms and cocci this year and he just finished a cocci treatment before coming here. He is extremely skinny with feet as long as he is skinny and he is not acting bucky at all. Now when they brought him over today and dropped him off they said, "We went ahead and banded him for you just before we brought him." I didn't care that he was a buck but they were under the assumption that we really want a wether. As soon as they left we snipped the band off him. It had only been on about 15 minutes and there doesn't seem to be any damage (I don't mind if he is a buck and actually think his life with BigWig will be better if stays a buck). He may be small but I think he is too big for banding and he was acting so depressed that BigWig was really running over him.
So, after we snipped the band off, we trimmed his feet, wormed him with Cydectin, gave him a shot of Bo-Se, copper bolused him, gave him his pasturella vaccine, gave him a shot of b-complex, and a little banamine because he was acting as if his manly areas were rather sore.
After all of that when I put him back in the pen with BigWig, he didn't let BigWig run him over as much. A couple of hours later when we went out to feed everyone, he was much, much perkier and determined not to let BigWig chase him away from his food. He and BigWig are the same age but BigWig is about twice as big and all buckiness. This little guy with his shrunken, skinny little frame and vertically stunted growth looks kind of pathetic next the well conditioned and muscled, impressive BigWig.
But, as you all know, this is not the first time we have taken in a goat in this kind of shape and you can bet that in a couple of months or so here,he will look like a different goat. I will get some pics of him tomorrow. He may be stunted a bit from his management as a kid, but since he is half boer, if we decide we like goat meat, he might make some fairly meaty babies if we decide we want to use him on a doe or two in the future for that reason.
