I've found several sets of plans for large semi-permanent hay mangers, but I'm wanting to make small portable ones to take to shows. Anyone have any plans or ideas? I'd appreciate it...

I was looking for a cheaper way to create something similar. I may go with the horse hay bags...I even found mini-sized ones for my pygmies. Always out for a deal!

I hear ya. Just be forewarned (and I use the hay bags myself) that you need to really keep an eye on your goats if you are using hay bags as sometimes they can get tangled and choke themselves to death.

yeah the net bags are very dangerous with goats but I find the ones with just one whole seem to be pretty safe but then a goat can find a way to hurt it's self with anything

That's what I was worried about. Hence the reason I was looking for plans for the hay racks that mount on the pens....

When we first started my carpenter uncle did make some of our hay feeders with wood but they weren't what I'd call sturdy or handy... they were fine for the week of the fair but they got broken in the stalls at home because goats in stalls take their extra energy out on the hayracks . they didn't stack well either for travel. we ended up just using the hay bags at shows and buying some heavy metal onces from our feed mill for home. they were $25 ea. they're smaller then the lg metal onces at tsc. but there bars are closer together so it's harder for them to get stuck... they're about half the price they are not bad for taking away either cause they stack. this is what they look like they just hang up on the sides of stalls... Thanks for the info! Im going to try to make some out of cattle panel and weld them (yes...me! I have a cousin that said he would help me). My plan is to make them about the size of a large flake of hay but so that it will fit snug so the little wasters wont pull as much out. I can cable tie them to the pens so they dont get themselves caught in them.

my hay feeders are metal pieces from an old bunk bed and an old futon (sp?) its sturdy and has the cross pieces right there. i tie them up with twine, my barn is made from pallets so its pretty easy to do.
